Course Description

The MRes in Management is a flexible programme allowing you to focus on business and management research. This course provides an opportunity for you to understand the research process within your chosen subject area, providing a pathway to gaining a postgraduate degree that develops essential, critical and analytical skills for workplace, or doctoral studies.
The programme has been designed to be flexible, putting you and your interests at the centre of the course. You’ll undertake two taught modules, at the start of the course, these will help you build a critical understanding of the research process.
By the end of the programme you will have the knowledge and skills that will equip you to undertake independent research at the frontier of the management field. This will enable you to pursue further Doctoral research or to take up employment in policy or practice that relies on management research. Graduates can pursue careers in management, including local and national government, business, and industry. Possible professions include management consultant, analyst or research project manager.

MRes is a full master’s degree programme of 180 credits, conducted by research on your area of choice. Upon completion, students receive a full UK Master’s degree and are eligible to further their Doctoral studies.

Course Content

This module introduces you to the fundamentals of Business and Management research. You’ll explore ways in which critical research can help us understand, interpret and analyse the discipline. It also considers how Business and Management Research impacts of organisational policy, practice and its wider impact on society.
This module prepares you to undertake research in business and management by providing the knowledge and understanding to undertake critical research. It develops core research skills relevant for various settings and contexts. After this module you’ll be prepared to undertake your own research project in Business and Management.
This module enables you to apply the learning from the previous modules to undertake an independent research project. Supported by a designated supervisor, you’ll to undertake a substantial written project investigating a complex business and management topic relevant to your own interest.

Study Method

You’ll undertake two taught modules, at the start of the course. You are invited to attend 2 optional block teaching sessions of 2 weeks, at UCLAN Preston campus. You will then move to a research study supported by a supervisor who will provide one to one tuition. You may undertake a supervised extended research project, either focused on a business or industry setting or solely within an academic context.
